Analysis of an Expressive Pattern
Your inquiry assignment should demonstrate your ability to:
· Analyze the structure of a pattern.
· Interpret the expressiveness of a pattern. |
This activity expands on what you learned in the lesson and challenges
you to apply what you learned to the vessel you’ve chosen to investigate.
Examine carefully the pattern on the vessel you have been investigating.
Analyze how it was made, the modules that make up the pattern, the elements
(or motifs) that make up each module, and how those parts are organized.
Then propose a feeling or idea that the pattern suggests to you and explain
your interpretation of the pattern.
Checklist
Write your journal assignment so that it addresses all the following
items:
1. I identified the vessel.
2. I identified the pattern as regular, irregular, or a combination.
3. I described module(s) that is/are repeated? (If the pattern is complex,
I also described the motifs or elements that make up each module.)
4. I described where the pattern(s) is/are located on the vessel.
5. I analyzed how the pattern(s) is/are organized (for example, if the
pattern is regular are modules repeated in a band, reversed, alternating,
staggered, or overlapping. If the pattern is irregular are modules evenly
spaced, clustered, or grouped in any way?)
6. I proposed a feeling or idea expressed by the pattern and explained
my interpretation.
