An Excellent Ceramic Vessel that I Like

Your inquiry assignment should demonstrate your ability to:
· distinguish your preferences from your judgments.
· use various criteria to judge art.

This activity expands on what you learned in the lesson and challenges you to apply what you learned to a ceramic artwork of your own choosing. Use print, Internet, and/or museum resources to locate a round ceramic vessel (bowl, vase, goblet, bottle, plate, tumbler, etc.) that you like and that you also think is good. Select a work that has a repeat pattern in its construction or somewhere on its surface. Plan to submit a photocopy, printout, or other reproduction of the vessel with your assignment.

You will be returning to this vessel throughout the program, asking different questions after each lesson. So it’s a good idea to look for a vessel about which you can find additional information, for example about the artist, forming process, culture, function, or interpretive commentary. You will use your inquiry assignments to help you write a Final Essay as the culmination of your participation in this program.

Checklist
Follow the checklist below as you write your inquiry assignment.

  1. I included a photocopy, printout, or other reproduction of the vessel I selected for inquiry.
  2. I identified the artwork by indicating artist, title, culture, size, and present location, as possible.
  3. I explained specifically what I like about the vessel.
  4. I identified what has happened in my past that may have influenced my preference (why I like it).
  5. I identified at least one criterion upon which I based my judgment that this is an excellent vessel.
  6. I explained how the vessel meets that criterion.
  7. I discussed how I learned about that criterion.
