Theme
This program is organized around the theme of excellence. Excellence has
been important to people for a long time and continues to be something
we care about in many aspects of our lives today.

Theme in Life: Different people often make different
judgments about what makes a thing (object, event, idea) excellent.
Theme in Art: We can all make our own judgments about
excellence in art.
Inquiry Questions
Each lesson in this program focuses on one of the following big questions:
Judgment: How are judgments about art different from
preferences?
That is, how is liking something different from concluding that it is
good?

Proportion: How do artists use proportions and profiles
in their work?
That is, how do artists make decisions about the size of one thing compared
to another and about the outside shape of their artworks?
Pattern: How do artists use patterns to make artworks
more expressive?
That is, how do artists repeat elements to help their artworks express
ideas and feelings?

This program invites you to explore the big idea of excellence and to
inquiry into judgment, proportion, and pattern as you investigate ceramic
art.
