PLAYWRITING* playwriting

Finding applicable, challenging material to produce with students can be difficult, but young people have amazing potential for creating their own work.  This unit is designed to engage students with script writing skills, to develop a wealth of original material for your classes and to possibly inspire future playwrights.  With the focus on writing and reading skills in educational settings, this unit provides an appropriate way to further incorporate writing in the theatre classroom.

Skills and Understandings

Students will be able to

  • Identify a variety of sources for inspiring original written material
  • Identify the major elements/structure of a play script
  • Develop original characters
  • Effectively incorporate technical design and stage directions into a script
  • Write a short play
  • Critique own and others’ works for effective rewriting

*This unit is distinct from devising due to the goal of the work.  Playwriting emphasizes a written product, while devising does not necessarily result in any written material.  However, the projects in both units may share characteristics for developing material since the creative process can be similar.
