ACTING 

Most secondary education theatre programs emphasize acting as the main component of theatre education.  It is, after all, the most visible aspect of theatre.  The following projects and lesson plans cover a number of skills required of any theatre artist.  There are a number of texts in publication that detail specific acting techniques, methods and curriculum.  The ideas listed in this unit are a basic representation of this broad field.

Skills and Understandings

Students will be able to

  • Name and use actor’s tools (body, voice, mind)
  • Identify the elements of a play (character, dialogue, rising action, climax, etc.)
  • Analyze a character
  • Memorize text
  • Create a character using a variety of methods (voice, movement, animal, desire, etc.)
  • Identify areas of the stage
  • Score a script with analysis and blocking
  • Locate appropriate scenes and monologues
  • Work collaboratively
  • Perform in role in front of an audience
  • Apply principles of major Western and non-Western schools of acting (Stanislavski, method, Kabuki, etc.)
