World Communities

In our modern world we hear about communities  around the world.  We see the people and places on television and learn about what is happening in China, Africa or Russia.

There are also people from countries around the world that live in the United States.  Perhaps you have friends or know students that come from other countries; or perhaps their parents have come to the United States from another country.

It is important that we know as much as possible about our world.

Here is some information about the country of China and the city of San Francisco in the United States.  We have also included models of monuments from Washington, D.C. and  Stratford, England, the birthplace of Shakespeare.

When we studied about these communities, we divided our class into four groups.  Each group studied one community.  The students answered the questions that are included here.  Each student in the group also made a model of an important building or bridge in the community.  (The patterns and instructions for the models are included at the end of the information about each community.) Then we held press conferences just as we might see on TV.  The students in each group shared with the class what they had learned about their community, and they showed off and explained their models.

The year before, instead of the press conferences, we created plays about our different communities.  We tried to include as much information as possible about the community in the play.  At the end of the information for each community there are links to ideas for creating and performing a play.

After we studied these communities we were excited about finding out about the many other people and places in our world.  We hope you will enjoy your imaginary travels!
