Geography

china map

The land of China is as big as the United States.
The map to the right shows the United States (the white part), with China on top of it (the shaded area). There is not much difference in size.

One big difference is the number of people that live in the two countries. China has 1,284,303,705, and growing. The United States has 290,279,975. China has more than 4 times as many people as the United States. China has more people in its country than any other nation in the world. The map at the following web site has more information:

China has many different environments. There are mountain ranges and big desert areas. There are rainforests that are hot and have lots of trees and rain. China has many rivers. It has areas in the north that are very cold in the winter. There are places in the south where it is hot and rainy most of the year.

One river is very famous, the Yangtze River. The Chinese government is building one of the world’s largest dams on this river. The waterpower from the dam will give the Chinese people electricity.

The Great Wall of China: The Great Wall is a wall that the Chinese started building over 2000 years ago. It was meant to go all the way around the country. Many parts of it don’t exist any more, but some parts have been kept up. It is the only man-made thing the astronauts and their cameras can see from outer space. Click on the following site to see what the Great Wall looks like today: http://goasia.about.com/library/weekly/aa112401a.htm

You should have answered questions 1 and 2 for your press conference.
