Screenplay

A screenplay is the dialogue and action-directions for the actors in a TV show or movie and directions for the cameraman. This is different from a play because of the information about what the camera should "see." It is also customary for the director to create storyboards to show the action. Here is an example of a screenplay. It is followed by an example of a storyboard.

The thief is caught and punished. . .”I don’t want to die.”

Example of a Screenplay by Anna, a third grader

Mrs. Ting: Of course. Sorry that little Albert has made

4. Inspector: Well, little Albert, who was winning, you or
your sister?
Albert: May was. Again!!
Mrs. Ting: He’s just telling stories. He was playing by
himself!
Inspector: Your neighbor has reported your lie. We
know you have twins!
Mrs. Ting: Ah-h-h.
Inspector: I’ll be back to pick one of them up this
afternoon. Be certain he or she is ready!
Mrs. Ting: Where will you take her?
The Inspector leaves.

5. May and Albert are playing pickup sticks on the floor. Mrs. Ting is packing a little suitcase.
Mrs. Ting: May, do you like the pickup sticks?
May: Oh, yes.
Mrs. Ting picks them up, puts them in the box and
puts the box into the suitcase.
Albert: Mama, why are you doing that? I want to keep
the pickup sticks.
There is a knock on the door.

6. Mrs. Ting opens the door. The Inspector enters.

7. He picks up the suitcase. He takes May’s hand and
starts to leave.
May turns and says: Mama!

8. Inspector walking down the sidewalk carrying the bag and holding May’s hand.

9. Albert, looking at his mother.
Albert: Where are they taking May! They can’t take May!
Mrs. Ting: Hush, Albert.
Pause:

10. Close up on Mrs. Ting’s face.
Mrs. Ting: We’ll still love her.
