Exercise 5. Line and Pattern
Based on a lesson by Jacqueline Andes

Pattern is an art principle; it is a way of using line, shape or color. It is the repetition of any of these elements. You'll find patterns in works of art, architecture, landscapes, decorative objects, clothing, wallpaper. We're surrounded by patterns. Now you can put your lines to work to make a pattern.

Materials:

  • A sheet of 9" x 12" paper, some paper to practice on
  • A drawing pencil and/or felt tip markers

Instructions:

  1. Create a silhouette of a simple figure
  2. Divide your paper into 9 equal boxes
  3. Repeat the figure in these boxes to create a pattern.

The student example has a rhythm to it. It has a feeling of movement, a visual tempo and beat. Rhythm is also one of the principles of art, helping artists decide how to use the art elements.

Checking out your work:
Does your pattern have a rhythm? How would you describe its rhythm?
