Art Criticism of Your own paintings (3 Examples)

1. Describe your subject. I drew a caricature (cartoon) of myself, my prized rug, and a puppet that I bought in Turkey.

2. Analyze your color scheme. I used monochromatic blues, analogous (red-and-yellow to make oranges), and complementary (yellow and purple to make dull browns).

3. Interpret the paintings' meanings. I show my love of Turkish rugs and how I miss the friends that I made in Turkey. The medallion designs seem to float away as my memories. The picture becomes a metaphor for how sad I felt about leaving Turkey.

4. What symbols did you use? The medallions on my rug suggest symbols of being free, but they are trapped in the hot-headed interpretation. My rug suggests my mind-"frayed ends." That means the threads are becoming rundown and loose.

5. How is your work expressive?
Ideas: To express my sadness
Feelings: Blue, Sad, Angry, Gloomy
Mood: Hot-headed, Dulled life
Symbols: The medallions suggest winged creatures.

6. How successful (unsuccessful) is your progression in the three paintings? How will you improve it? My first blue painting has only one color to suggest my mood. It is rather static. My complementary painting has more distortions-frayed ends. My third painting has the most color mixing, but I can't see my facial expression. I should exaggerate the mouth expression more.

7. Other? I tried to draw myself because I didn't have a scanner. Please do not grade me lower because I tried to use the draw program as well. When I get a scanner, I'll try the assignment with a photograph! What I learned is more important than how I painted.
