Art Criticism Report

Write an Art Criticism Report on one artwork selected from one of the following websites:

Worlds' Women On-Line - http://wwol.is.asu.edu/

Chicano Arte Link - http://mati.eas.asu.edu/ChicanArte/gallery.html

ASU Art Museum - http://asuartmuseum.asu.edu/home.html

1. Search these sites to find a painting or another kind of artwork that intrigues or bothers you. Download the image of the artwork you have selected so that you can examine it more closely.

2. Be a detective. Search for the clues that will help you describe and analyze the artwork. Download the Description, Analysis, Interpretation and Judgment sections of this lesson to have the questions available to help your search.

3. Gather the opinion of three others such as a friend, your mother, a neighbor. What difference do you notice in their opinions? Use their differing opinions to help you think through how you interpret and judge the artwork.

4. Now create an outline for your paper. Label the four stages of Art Criticism: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, and Judgment. You may choose to include the following sub categories: Description: subject matter, technique; Interpretation: feelings, senses. Be certain to include the labels in your final paper. After you've created this outline, use it as a guide for writing the paper.

5. Your paper must be at least 400 words.

6. Check your spelling and use of sentences. Don't forget to include the name of the artist and the work of art!

7. Check your paper against the assessment rubric; rewrite if needed to assure your best work.

8. Give your teacher a color copy of the artwork, the Internet address, and your art criticism paper.
