The Hohokam and the Stories they Might Have Told

The Hohokam and Pimas had no schools. Instead they told their children stories. The stories were about the tribe. They were about their families and their past. They used stories to explain the world around them. Some of the stories were just for fun, to entertain.

Here are several examples of stories that children in a third grade class made up to explain how things began. They had fun making these up. When they told their stories they added lots of interesting details.

How Tigers Got Their Stripes
A long time ago, when the world was new, a tiger was so hungry that he was angry.
So he jumped to the Arctic and stuffed the penguins into his mouth. Then the leader of the penguins said, "If you eat me, you will have black stripes." So the tiger did!
And that, boys and girls, is how the tiger got black stripes. By Maya

How Snakes Got Their Rattle Tails
A long, long time ago when the world was new, there was a mean snake.
When his father heard how mean he was he threw the little snake's tail into the fire. The tail got stickers in it.
And that, boys and girls, is how snake got his rattle tail. By Tom

Why Lizards Have Heads
A long time ago when the world was new, lizards didn't have heads. They bumped into stuff and each other.
The leader said, "We need heads. Let's go find some." They asked coyote, "Do you have any heads for us?" Coyote said, "No." They went to snake. They asked snake, "Do you have any heads we can have?" Snake said, "No," but the lizards new that snake was lying.
They came back that night and got their heads! They didn't bump into things anymore.
And that, boys and girls, is how lizards got their heads.

Why Dinosaurs Are Extinct
A long time ago when the world was new, dinosaurs roamed the world, but when it got so hot in the desert, the dinosaurs got tired of eating saquaros.
So they built a space ship and flew to the sky.
Sometimes you can see the dinosaurs in the sky.
And that, boys and girls, is how dinosaurs became extinct. By Rio
