The Hohokam

The Hohokam first appeared in the desert 1,500 years ago! This was about 450 A.D. (The Hohokam had ancestors who were hunters that lived here earlier than that.)

Archeologists
, people who study the pottery and buildings left by human beings, have found places that tell us much about this early community of Native Americans. We call them Native Americans to show that they were the first people to live in this country.

This map of Arizona shows that the Hohokam lived by the Salt River. This is where Phoenix and Tempe are today. The other names on the map, the Anasazi, Patayan and Mogollon, were other Indian tribes that lived in Arizona at that time.
