Playwriting activity by Carrie Mills

A playwright is the person who writes the words that the actors say in a play. A play is a story, but it looks different than a book. The name at the beginning of each line tells you who is speaking.

The words in blue are “stage directions.” They tell you what the actors are doing.

The play starts by listing the characters. In this play, that you are going to complete, we have:

Max, a young boy
Gypsy Giovanna, a magical lady
Silvius, a lost dragon
Queen Minerva

Max is sitting in his room after school. He is very unhappy. There is a beautiful globe in his room.

Max: I had a really bad day at school. I got picked last for soccer. I sat by myself at lunch. And I have to write a story for homework. I wish I could go far away!

Max spins the globe. Gypsy Giovanna appears.

Gypsy Giovanna: I can help you, Max.

Max: Who are you?

Gypsy Giovanna: My name is Giovanna. I can help you go far away.

Max: How?

Gypsy Giovanna: Spin the globe, and you can go anywhere!

Max: Okay.

Max spins the globe again. Max and Giovanna travel to a new place.

Max: Where are we?

Gypsy Giovanna: Adventureland! Here is a map for you to use. Have fun!

Max: Thanks!

Gypsy Giovanna leaves. Max looks at the map. He sees the Dragon Forest and the Castle.
