Outreach for Elementary and Middle School: Art a la Cart
Art a la Cart presentations provide a comprehensive art lesson including, art history, aesthetics and a hands-on studio experience. We provide the expertise, and you provide basic art materials. These presentations last from 40 minutes to 1 ∏ hours and are limited to 30 students at a time. Consecutive classes may be scheduled. Call 626-9899 to schedule Art a la Cart in your classroom. Choose from the following themes:

The Art of Mexico (grades K-8) The Mexican Muralists created a national style for the people. Through storytelling and observation, students examine the history and heroes of Mexico. Following our discussion, students will create their own hero drawing.

Home on the Range: Art of the Western Frontier (grades K-6)
We'll round up your students and explore the Old West through the art of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Students will learn basic design principles and illustrate a poem.
Jacob Lawrence, American Painter (grades K-8)
"My pictures express my life experiences. The things I have experienced extend into my national, racial and class group. So I paint the American scene."
Discussion includes important historical concepts about the Black Experience in America. Students will create a work of art based on their life experience.

The Magic of Color (grades K-3)
This playful approach to studying color will introduce students to the color wheel: the primary and secondary colors, and warm and cool colors. We will discuss how colors elicit feelings and emotions, while we explore the magic that color adds to our world.

The Magic of Color: Creating Optical Illusions (grades 4-8)
Color has the ability to fool our eyes and captivate our senses. Students will explore basic artistic and scientific properties of color and discover how artists create volume, space and movement in a work of art.

Perspective: The Illusion of Depth (grades 4-8)
Students will test their own perceptions of the space around them to better understand how we perceive distance. This lesson covers the six rules of atmospheric perspective and provides an opportunity for students to create a drawing in perspective.

Who is this Person? (grades K-8)
Faces are revealing. Using stories and reproductions, students will learn how to interpret portraits from the past and present. They will create a portrait of their own.

The Place of Public Art (grades 4-8)
Build an awareness of public art's function in the community. Explore the history and significance of public art and how it impacts the environment. Students will design an artwork that delivers a message.

Outreach for Middle School & High School: Gallery Learning Model

The Gallery Learning Model is an opportunity for students to develop their visual, verbal and writing skills through the creation of a student-run art gallery. Museum professionals and knowledgeable volunteers consult and teach students the mechanics of running and maintaining an art gallery. Students improve their communication skills and build self-esteem as they fill the roles of curator, registrar, exhibit specialist and educator. The Gallery Learning Model is a comprehensive program that requires a space suitable for developing a regular display of artwork and a yearlong commitment. To discuss the possibility of a student-run gallery at your school call the Education Department at 621-9506.

UAMA is committed to providing opportunities for Arizona educators to continue to extend their own knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts.

In-service & Parent-Teacher Presentations
Our staff is available to conduct lectures and in-service sessions or PTO presentations at your school. Presentations can focus on aspects of our collection, ways of involving students, teachers, and parents in using UAMA as a resource, and discussions on art appreciation and aesthetics. Presentations require a one-month advance booking. Call 621-9506 for more information.

Educator Workshops
UAMA Educator Institutes provide practical knowledge and experience with art materials, art history and criticism that you can use in your classroom. Workshops are designed for art specialists and general curriculum teachers. Professional development credit is available with most programs. The majority of workshops are offered during the summer. Call 621-9506 to inquire about current workshops.
